The Lowry Avenue Bridge Replacement project was a new steel tied-arch bridge that replaced the original Lowry Avenue structure, a 5-span truss bridge built in 1905. Extending across the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, the original bridge lasted over 50 years before its first major renovation. Bridge updates were completed in 1958 and 2003.
In 2009, the bridge was closed and demolished due to safety concerns. The reconstruction of this historic structure started with the new Lowry Avenue Bridge project in 2009 and was completed during the Summer of 2012. The construction project photo documentation services helped the bridge replacement team collaborate better which made a profound impact on timely deliverables to stakeholders.

The Lowry Avenue Bridge, a 5-span truss bridge originally built in 1905, was closed and demolished in 2009 due to safety concerns after lasting over a century with major renovations in 1958 and 2003. The reconstruction of this historic structure extending across the Mississippi River in Minneapolis required comprehensive documentation from pre-slab conditions through completion.
The project involved complex infrastructure elements including deck spans and slabs, stay cables, arch installation, east and west abutments, pile caps, pier pods, footings, bridge and railroad decks, sand filters, retaining walls, SWPP conditions, and an underwater treatment interceptor. Coordinating documentation across all these elements while maintaining team collaboration was essential for timely delivery.
Multivista initiated photographic progress documentation of the structure in Fall 2009 with the Site Survey Exact-Built photo shoot of all pre-existing conditions near the project site. In Spring 2010, Multivista began documenting the Exterior Progression of the site, as well as Bridge Deck Pre-Slab Exact-Built conditions.
As construction progressed, Multivista was onsite to capture other bridge-specific shoots including the East and West Abutments, Pile Caps, Pier Pods, Footings Exact-Built, Bridge and Railroad Decks, and Sand Filters. Multivista performed Monthly Progression Documentation, as well as Slideshow Documentation.
Between November 2009 and project completion in early September 2012, 14,238 high-resolution photos of the construction process were captured to document progress and as-built conditions across the 650,000 sq. ft. project.
The documentation service had a profound impact on team communication, collaboration, and the life cycle continuity for the Lowry Avenue Bridge project overall. The documentation provides Hennepin County with a long-term permanent record of all elements of the construction process, including deck spans and slabs, stay cables, arch installation, east and west retaining walls, SWPP conditions, and the underwater treatment interceptor.
